The civil service is made up of people from all walks of life, such as scientists, doctors, engineers, economists and accountants. They are employed directly by central government departments or local authorities.

Civil servants are charged with the responsibility of maintaining public order, promoting good governance, and implementing government policies.

The civil servant's job responsibilities vary from country to country. In India, a civil servant is defined as a person who works in any of the Central Government Departments or State Government Departments and is appointed by the President of India for a fixed term of five years.
